Saudi Arabia Wins Bid to Host World Expo 2030 in Riyadh


In a momentous triumph, Saudi Arabia has been selected as the host of the World Expo 2030. The country is all set to host the event in Riyadh. As the news reverberates across the globe, heartfelt congratulations pour in from all corners of the world, celebrating this remarkable achievement.

Global Leaders Congratulate Saudi Arabia on Securing Expo 2030


Congratulations are coming to Saudi Arabia from all over the world to celebrate the Riyadh Expo 2030, here are a few of the praise that the people of Saudi Arabia are receiving:

  • Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai (the host of the World Expo 2020) said “We congratulate our brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for winning to host Expo 2030, and we are confident that Riyadh is capable of dazzling the world through this great event... Congratulations to Saudi Arabia and congratulations to all Arabs”.

  • His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan the president of UAE said “I extend my sincere congratulations to King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the people of Saudi Arabia for the Kingdom's successful bid to host Expo 2030. Through resounding support for Riyadh Expo 2030, the international community continues to recognise the remarkable path toward growth and prosperity in Saudi Arabia” among many others.

  • His Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud extends his congratulations to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the people of Saudi Arabia and said: “The Kingdom’s win to host Expo 2030 reinforces its pivotal and leading role and international confidence, making it an ideal destination for hosting prominent global events, such as the World Expo” His Highness also added, “Our hosting of Expo 2030 will coincide with the culmination of the targets and plans of Saudi Vision 2030, where the exhibition presents an ideal opportunity for us to share with the world the lessons learned from an unprecedented transformational journey.”


But to truly understand the impact of this achievement and what it means for the people of Saudi Arabia we need to understand the history of the World Expo and how we got to this moment.

The Worlds Expos

The World Expos are a series of international events that showcase the latest advancements in science, technology, culture, and innovation, held every five years in different countries around the world. The first World Expo was held in London in 1851, and since then, there have been over 35 World Expos held in 24 different cities.


The World Expos are designed to be a celebration of human ingenuity and creativity. They provide a platform for countries to showcase their best products, services, and ideas to a global audience. They also encourage cross-cultural exchange and collaboration, and they can be a powerful tool for promoting peace and understanding.


The Expo 2030 bid concluded and the Expo 2030 candidates had plans to change the future of the world, so let's take a look at the Expo 2030 candidates and what Saudi Arabia did to beat out its competition for the right to host Riyadh Expo 2030.

The Expo 2030 candidates

The candidates for the Expo 2030 were:

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s bid for the World Expo 2030 was for it to be held in Riyadh, under the name of Riyadh Expo 2030, proposed it is held between 1 October 2030 and 31 March 2031, under the theme of “The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow”.

Saudi Arabia’s plans are for a better future for the world, with their theme being an invitation for people of the world to join in on this tremendous task with courage and innovation, with their three sub-themes:

  • A Different Tomorrow

  • Climate Action

  • Prosperity for All

Saudi Arabia has launched a major campaign to promote its World Expo 2030 bid, including a large exhibition near the Eiffel Tower and a widespread advertising campaign across Paris, that has received the backing of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Republic of Korea

The Republic of Korea’s bid for the World Expo was for it to be hosted in the northern region of Busan, between the 1st of May 2030 and the 31st of October 2030, with the theme “Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future”.

South Korea wishes to reflect on the effect of rapid growth in advancements and to combat climate change in its theme in its three sub-themes:

  • Sustainable living with nature

  • Technology for Humanity

  • A Platform for Caring and Sharing

The South Korean port city of Busan recruited renowned cultural figures like global sensation Psy, the creator of "Gangnam Style," and the pop music phenomenon BTS to strengthen its bid.

Italy

Italy’s bid for the World Expo was to be held in the world-renowned city of Rome between May 1st and October 31st, 2030 under the theme of “People and Territories: Regeneration, Inclusion and Innovation

With the underlined theme Italy's offer emphasises the power of communities as they intend to create a world that is a poly-centric and truly inclusive world that offers everyone the same opportunities and chances regardless of who they are.

Their sub-themes are:

  • Ensuring that the Expo leaves tangible legacy benefits behind

  • Leading through example

To highlight Rome's readiness for the Worlds Expo, the city enlisted actor Russell Crowe, who embodied his iconic “Gladiator” persona in a promotional video.

Expo 2030 Location

With the Expo 2025 set to take place in Osaka, Japan, the world will then turn its attention to the Expo 2030 location which is envisioned as a futuristic urban centre nestled around an ancient valley, the site pays homage to Riyadh's rich history as an "oasis" and "garden city," embodying Saudi Arabia's ambitious vision to pave the way for sustainable urban development and thriving communities.


The EXPO 2030 exhibition attracted participants from all over the world, including national and international organizations, along with companies, non-governmental organizations, universities, entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators. It helps us envision a future where cities and nature coexist in harmony, where urban landscapes are transformed into flourishing ecosystems that nurture sustainability and innovation, leading the way towards a brighter and more sustainable future.
